Combatting Epistemic Adversaries: Improving Democratic Deliberation Through Serious Games

This Project is funded by a University of Calgary Transdisciplinary Connector Grant (Initiating Stream).

The project frames cybersecurity threats to democracy and responses as a battle between epistemic adversaries. The project goal is to develop a preliminary understanding of information manipulation, the capacities necessary for democratic deliberation, the design of a serious computer game, and a plan for future funding to further the project.

This project seeks to begin the process of building a serious game. Five separate activities are part of the project which include identifying tactics used by epistemic adversaries to fulfil their goals, epistemic capabilities required by citizens to meaningfully participate in a democracy, identifying game design principles that are required to combat epistemic attacks, broaden related activities under the NCC grant on Protecting Democracy from Cyber Threats and planning for future funding. Future funding may be used to further develop a more sophisticated technological concept based on knowledge of political epistemology, game design, legal theory, and their interplay acquired during the project.
